Stephen Brenner, M.D.

He received his MD degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse in 1970 and completed the first part of his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at the Philadelphia General Hospital on the University of Pennsylvania service. He then served as a General Medical Officer in the US Air Force for 2 years. After his discharge, he finished his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at Roger Williams General Hospital in Providence, RI.
Dr. Brenner has been practicing Primary Care Internal Medicine in New Haven for over 3 decades, with a practice emphasis on preventive care. He is especially interested in the important role that primary care doctors have in preventing the complications of lipid disorders, hypertension and diabetes and coordinating that care with specialists.
An attending physician at Yale-New Haven Hospital, he is also the Associate Section Chief for General Internal Medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital and at the Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Brenner is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine. For many years he served on a variety of committees and medical boards at the hospital as well as in the greater New Haven community. He continues to be the Community Representative for General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Dr. Brenner was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 1997. He is very proud of his teaching accomplishments, having received teaching awards from the Yale School of Medicine for teaching medical students and St. Raphael’s Hospital for teaching medical residents. He has been elected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America® every year since 1996, has been included in Connecticut Magazine’s annual “Top Docs” edition and has been selected for the Castle Connolly Top Doctors award and the US News and World Report Best Doctors in America as well..
Since 1982, Dr. Brenner has greatly enjoyed being the House Physician at New Haven’s Long Wharf Theater and is proud to be have been honored by that theater with its Founder’s Award in 2011.
Dr. Brenner is married and has two grown children and 7 delightful grandchildren. He lives in New Haven and enjoys photography and reading when he is not busy with his practice and his family. If you have been to his office, you have seen many examples of his photography.
